I have alot of great memories with my mom. Lots of drives to Utah. Lots of days in the hospital. But what we both love are old movies. I love watching movies with her. Oklahoma, sound of music, north and south, Ann of green gables. Most memorable pride and prejudice. One time we were sick so we watched the whole thing. Then the next day we decided 6 hours of Mr.Darcy wasn't enough. So we watched it again. I love having these days with her. Staying in our pj's, going to get refils and watching great movies, that boys don't really appreciate. I just love my momma. You are the best.
I also have quite a few great memories of karen. All the walks we've been on, the movies we've watched, going out to eat, shopping trips, and family vacations. But something I'll always remember (and admire) is how she always made me feel from day one. Even after 4 long years of off-and-on dating kyler, she still loved me and made me feel like one of her daughters. I am so grateful for her and everything she does for me. Love you momma Redder! Hope you have a fabulous Birthday!!!!
Something that really stands out to me about Mom is how FUN she is to be around. She is a party animal. Growing up she was usually the last one to bed and she's still always up for a game of cards. One of my most memorable moments dealing with one of moms fun nights is when she took me and a suburban full of my girlfriends to toilet paper a boys house. Little did we know, the boys were ready for us and had the house booby-trapped. Someone ended up getting stiches and I believe the cops came over (or was that another time?). Anyway, I just loved how mom was never too old to have some good old fashion fun. And I love that she is still that fun person years later. Happy 51st mom--can't wait to see what you'll be doing in another 50! Love you!
My favorite memory of Mom is staying up late and talking in the piano room. I enjoyed her company, her listening ear and feeling her real interest/concern. It was great hearing of her experiences and her insight. I am very thankful for her and all of her sacrifices for me.
One night about 5 or 6 months before you were born, I was kneeling down in front of mom as she was sitting in a chair putting my hair in rollers. I was just chatting away and I felt her stomach. I said, “Mom, you’re getting fat. Are you having a baby or something?” She took my face in both her hands & said, “Guess what? I AM having a baby!” I couldn’t believe it! I was ecstatic & so surprised. I didn’t know what to do with myself!! All the long months until you were born, I wanted a little sister so badly! I remember your birthday, July 7, 1959, when mom & dad went to the hospital to have you & I was patiently waiting by the telephone. Dad finally called & said something like, “What were you hoping the baby was? I said “A girl!” He said, “Well, that’s what you got!” You probably don’t even realize the happy impact you had on our family, Karen!! Honestly, no worldly possession of any kind or a big fancy trip to Disneyland or around the world could have brought more joy to us! You were so darling with lots of black hair, and I remember friends & family coming to visit to see our beautiful baby. One day two school teachers Mrs. Bryce & Mrs. Dudgeon called to see if they could come to see you. You were sleeping in your crib in Mom & Dad’s room & mom didn’t want to wake you, so mom said to me, “Help me put this lacey tablecloth over the top of my bedspread to make it look nicer.” It looked so pretty! Sometimes when you were sleeping, I would jiggle your crib to wake you up, making sure mom didn’t see me. One time I reached in your crib & touched your face & kind of pinched your cheek so you would open your eyes & start crying so I could get you out! Mom was Primary president when you were a baby, so you got to go to Primary with us! I loved having you there & all our big primary knew you were my baby sister! I really think you’re the reason I’ve loved babies so much my whole life, because when Carl was born I wasn’t even 4 years old, & I don’t remember him as a baby much. When we were moved to Chico, Aunt Jeannie said to me, “Now that you’ll be living in California, maybe you can get Karen in some TV commercials, cause she’s so cute!” Remember how close we lived to the swimming pool when we lived on Geneva Lane? You learned to swim so quickly & so well. We both did hand stands at the edge of the pool and fell over into the pool! During the summer I’d get you dressed & comb your hair & take you to the pool before it opened, because the swim team practiced almost every morning. I had friends on the swim team & I wanted to show you off ! I put your hair in pony tails or little bun thingies with bobby pins. You told me a couple years ago that I broke a brush on your head because you wouldn’t hold still. I’m so sorry, Karen. You were probably tired of me making you go with me! I did like fixing your beautiful hair. I don’t ever remember getting tired of that. If I didn’t tell you how proud I was of you, I’m sorry, cause I always have been!! I thought it was fun to have you at BYU when we lived so close. You would have our older kids come to sleep overnight-I remember you had a roommate named DMO that would also play with our kids. I vividly remember your falling in love with Guy & I was happy to hear the details. It was fun for me & I liked Guy from the very beginning! Marrying him was a very smart thing !! You have so many wonderful qualities, Karen & I appreciate all the good things you’ve always done for me! I love your little phrase, I love you MORE. I use it on my grandkids when they tell me they love me! I love you, little sister! I hope you have a very Happy Birthday, Karen! I’m grateful to Heavenly Father for letting me be your sister!!
Halle says... My favorite memory of Aunt Karen is going to her house and playing. She always gives me candy and makes me feel special. I really like when she has Ikey at her house.
I remember one of the first times I met Karen we both connected talking about politics and history, and I have always felt she was a "kindred spirit" to me. Another time after I first met her, I remember dropping by, her home always open and so welcoming, and she said to get my swim suit and come lay out on the trampoline with her and her girls. I remember laying out and chatting it up and thinking, 'wow! she is the coolest, most fun mom EVER!' I've always loved hanging out, watching old movies, playing games, and going shopping with her. Karen has listened through my many, many 'counseling' sessions and is always so willing to listen and to offer her wisdom and love. I have always admired that in her and have appreciated it so much. She is one of the best role models I know. Love you Karen! You are the bestest!
There are lots of favorite memories--One being just going to Hawaii for our 30th wedding anniversary. The second one being the Christmas surprise of the yellow Volkswagon bug with the 'Karen1' license plate. Karen was so surprised, and so were all the kids--no one had any idea. I had someone pull it into the car in the middle of the night. We all piled into the little car and gave it a whirl that Christmas morning. She loved driving the bug and I always got a smile on my face as she would drive by. The car reminded me of her happy and cheerful personality.
Karen stays in excellent shape, all it takes is eating healthy and walking in the mornings with the dogs and good company. A lot of times I would go with her.(thank you Karen for teaching me about the importance of fitness.) On one of our walks we spotted a cute baby kitten. It was in a huge empty field. Wilson the natural hunter had also spotted the defenseless kitten. We darted to that kitten on pure adrenaline and motherly love. We didn't beat Wilson. I think Karen pulled Wilson's tail and I was kicking him and trying to pull the cat out of his mouth. We both could have been hurt by a fierce bite. We didn't think twice to save the innocent little meow meow. She is a great mother and protector. I love you Karen, Happy Birthday!
Karen, you were cute from the minute you came into the world! You brought the finishing touch to our family. We were all proud to show you off to everyone. There are so many fun memories connected to you; it's hard to think of just one--but I will limit my thoughts. One time that I remember in particular occurred near the end of my freshman year at BYU (1963). I was in Logan at Utah State playing in a softball tournament. Mom and Dad had told me that they were going to be driving down to see some of the games. (The farm in Meridian had been sold, and we were soon to be moving to Chico, so Dad did not have to be at home doing spring farming.) I remember watching the new Buick come driving close to where we were playing--I just knew it had to be my family. Sure enough, there you all were! I was so happy to see everyone. I had not been home since Christmas. I was pitching, but I would come over to visit with the family when we were up to bat. Earlene Durrant was our coach that year, and she told me to go spend as much time as I could with you all. When you, Karen, started your "famous" rooster crow whistle, all my teammates crowded around to watch, listen, and laugh. They completely forgot about our game!!!! You would puff up your cheeks, flap your arms, and actually whistle a big, long, loud tone. (I can't remember if you inhaled or exhaled to make the sound, but it seems like you inhaled--just the opposite of most people, of course!) I wasn't even embarrassed! I'm glad you have kept your cute personality all through your life--it matches your spirit! I love you LOTS. Louise
This would have to be the first time I met Karen. Only because I was this mysterious boy who was dating her daughter. (and a Utah fan). And she still was able to find a spot deep deep down in her heart to give me a hug. She did this without questioning my fanhood.
I have so many memories with Aunt Karen. One memory was when I was 5 or so. Karen was dating this handsome guy named Guy at BYU. I think she could have been babysitting us at the time. Karen and Guy took me, Greg, Lori, and Deb to get candy in the bookstore and we went to see Pete's Dragon in the BYU theaters. It was so fun. Thanks Karen for letting me come to your house so many summers. Happy Birthday!! I love you!
Karen, you have the ability to reach out to others and to provide the empathy, love, and friendship that they need. One of my most special memories of you comes from the time Rick and Becky drowned and Juanita came to live downstairs with us. You were so very helpful and caring. I was proud of you for how much help and support you gave to Juanita with her two little boys. (In fact, you have been close to and good with all the grand kids. Thank you.)
When we left Great Falls to move to Billings, I knew it was especially hard on you, Karen. It was just three weeks before the start of your junior year in high school. You had to give up your position on the dance/drill performing squad and leave all of your friends to move to a new high school where you were a nobody. I admired you for how well you made the adjustment. During that year you made many new friends and became popular enough that you became the cheerleading squad manager your senior year. You showed that you could really make something GREAT out of an undesirable position.
When Kam and I were engaged there was a "Mother's week" up at BYU-I. Since none of her daughters were up there at that time, and she couldn't stay with Ky and Kam, I pulled the nieghbor's matteress into my ting apt. room. I remember being nervous thinking "Is this going to be awkward having a sleepover with my future Mother-in-law. It was quite the opposite. Momma Redder and I stayed up half the night talking like girlfriends.
I love late night chats with Momma Redder. She is not only my mother-in-law she is my friend. I love talking in the Piano room till late during the Christmas season when all the snow village homes are set up and the tree is twinkling. I love Karen's love for the holidays.
Momma Redder is the queen of her home. She has created a spirit of love, so that everyone wants to come in and feel at home. She has been known to take in stray animals. with her compassionate sould she shapes them up and loves them. She does the same thing with people. Once you enter into her home you know that you always have a place to go if you ever need a mother's love.
I love you Momma Redder! Thanks for always treating me like a daughter.
I have always loved Aunt Karen. I remember being at her house when I was really young (maybe 3 or 4) and she made tuna sandwiches for lunch. I hated tuna and would never eat it for my mom, but I loved Karen so much and didn't want to disappoint her, so I gobbled it up.
I have a funny memory of staying at her house as a teenager... but it's vague, so hopefully I am not making it up :) I remember going TPing with her several times, but one night she took us and loaded a TON of toilet paper. We drove around forever trying to find the right house to toilet paper, but no one could decide. Finally Karen pulled over to some random house. No one knew who lived there, but they had a TON of trees, so we had a hay-day. The next morning we drove by to see what a great job we had done. Much to our surprise there were cars lining the streets and twenty or thirty people helping clean up. We asked what was going on and some guy said, "We're helping clean up this house. The woman who lives here is 80 years old and someone had the audacity to toilet paper her!" I don't remember anyone admitting anything!
Love you, Karen! You have always been such a great aunt and friend to me. Happy Birthday!
Carl says: I remember walking to school with Karen when we lived on Geneva Lane. When she was in kindergarten I was in 5th grade and she maybe went to afternoon kindergarten, so we just walked home together. In her first grade we walked to and from school together. She seemed to always like school and was happy to go, except for maybe the first day of kindergarten. Happy Biethday, Karen. I love you!!
I have a lot of fun memories with Aunt Karen. One time I stayed at the Redder's, I was really young so I don't remember much, but I do remember riding in one of those little bike trailers Aunt Karen or Uncle Guy drove Kace and I down the street. I had never been in one of those and it was a lot of fun! I also remember walking up and down the canal behind the Redder's house. One time my mom, Aunt Karen, and I walked together (I think the dogs came too...) I think I will always remember what the Redder's house smells like. It's a good smell, of course! Aunt Karen has always been so loving to me. As a little girl I remember always feeling warm around her. When I stayed at her house, when she came to visit us in Salt Lake, or at family reunions, she always made me feel good. I love you and I hope you are having a wonderful birthday! Thanks for being such a great aunt and example!
Mom has always been so nurturing, sympathetic towards, and willing to serve her kids. As an example, I remember one day when I was in Jr. High I was feeling a little sick to my stomach and played it up a little worse than it was. Mom let me stay home from school and took care of me. She made me a bed on the couch and put on a movie on for me. She was getting ready to run some errands and asked if I needed anything else. I decided to give it a shot and told her a Bandito Burrito and a Slush Puppie would help me feel better. To my surprise, about an hour later she came downstairs with my food and drink. Now that I think back, it should have been a dead give away that I wasn't too sick if I was asking for that. And mom probably knew it, nevertheless she still chose to serve and gave me that special attention. She is so good at taking care of us.
I can't count the number of times that things like this went unnoticed and/or underappreciated. I have so much more gratitude for mom now that I'm a parent. What hard work! Thanks for all of the thousands of daily sacrifices that you made for us, mom! Though they mave have gone individually unnoticed at times, the sum of those sacrifices has created something truly beautiful for all of us!
